Lights out on parish budget

The lights were literally out when the St. Landry Parish Council’s Administrative-Finance Committee began its discussion of the parish budget. Which may have been fortunate because the committee was told the budget, which is to be prepared by Parish President Bill Fontenot, has not been completed.

Fontenot: Downtown development, city cleanup in his focus

Downtown development and neighborhood cleanup were on Eunice Mayor Scott Fontenot’s mind as he discussed winning his first four-year term. There will be a focus on clearing the city of properties that have been adjudicated to the city and parish governments, he said.

Support for gambling increases

Louisianans voted Tuesday to legalize Daily Fantasy Sports contests in 47 out of 64 parishes, suggesting a significant increase in support for gaming since the 1990s. Back then, only 31 parishes voted to allow video poker.

St. Landry Parish schools get a C

The St. Landry Parish public school district earned a C in the new and more rigorous state grading system. And, if the system had remained unchanged, the St. Landry Parish District score would have been a B at 85 performance points with 13.3 points of gain from the 2017 score.

The Director of the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) Scott Angelle will now serve as the chairman of the Royalty Policy Committee (RPC). Appointed by U. S. Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke, Angelle had been serving as Acting Chairman.

Bobcats face Brusly Panthers at home

The Eunice High Bobcats finished their regular season with an 8-2 record, earning the second seed in the 2018 LHSAA Class 3A playoff bracket. Coach Paul Trosclair’s Bobcats will take on the Brusly Panthers, the number 31 seed, on Friday at Bobcat Stadium.
