Workers from Idaho helped start park

On a bright, warm Oct. 20, 1933, a special train pulled into the depot at St. Martinville. It carried 75 enrollees of the Civilian Conservation Corps. All of the men were from Idaho and none of them had heard of St. Martinville or its heroine, Evangeline, until very recently.

Did you know? Law mandates a report on domestic abuse calls

State law (R.S.46:2141) mandates that whenever a law enforcement officer investigates an allegation of domestic abuse, whether or not an arrest is made, the officer shall make a written report of the alleged incident, including a statement of the complainant and the disposition of the case.

Gravel is OK for Smooth Ride Home

Gravel will do just fine for some parish roads and the Smooth Ride Home Program’s 2 percent sales tax will pay, but not if it is just for a couple of loads of gravel. That was the decision from Wednesday’s St. Landry Parish Council meeting in Opelousas.

Early voting begins Tuesday in Eunice

Early voting begins Tuesday for the Nov. 6 election. Voting continues from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. through Oct. 30 except Sunday, Oct. 28. Early voting will be held at the Eunice Municipal Complex on the first floor. The deadline to request an absentee by mail ballot is Nov. 2 by 4:30 p.m.

Political forum: Calls for teamwork economic growth

Candidates in Eunice’s city election called for teamwork, economic development and a cleaner community at the Eunice Chamber of Commerce political forum Thursday at the Liberty Theater. Candidates were given four minutes to respond to a question from moderator Kenneth Pitre.

DOTD announces Evangeline Parish project

The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development announces that Beginning Oct. 29, construction will begin on a $5.4 million project on La. 95 from La. 104 to La. 29 in Evangeline Parish. The work is estimated to take place Mondays through Fridays from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., weather permitting.
