A gun battle in Eunice that started about 5:30 a.m. Tuesday at La. 13 and Maple Avenue is a continuation of shootings that occurred a week ago, Eunice Police Chief Randy Fontenot said.
Two people have been held and released in connection with the morning gun battle Fontenot believes involved at least two vehicles.
One vehicle, a black Dodge Charger with nine bullet holes in it, was recovered behind a residence in the 100 block of College Road.
Anyone with information about the shootings is asked to call Police at 337-457-2626.
Police first received calls about gunshots being heard at La. 13 and Maple Avenue Tuesday morning.
Shots were fired again at Perrotti and Ulysse and possibly other locations, Fontenot said.
“We are not sure if they returned fire or not yet. We have evidence to indicate some fire was returned. Now, whether they did it or not is our question,” he said Wednesday.
The shooting follows two incidents on June 6 that left three people — a 7-year-old boy and two adults, wounded.
Jamie Ned, 17, also known as Jamie Freeman, of North Cane Street, Eunice, is accused of wounding the 7-year-old boy in a shooting at about 7:30 p.m. June 6 near Golden Seafood on East Maple Avenue.
The boy was hit by a stray bullet, Fontenot said.
About two hours later two men, identified as the uncles of the wounded boy, were shot by Ned in the 200 block of Minerva Street, Fontenot said.
The wounded men were identified as Clarence Mitchell, 29, and Travis Mitchell, 30, of Eunice.
In Tuesday’s shooting, a juvenile and 17-year-old were held for questioning, he said.
“We recovered some of the bullets and at the scene where we located the car we recovered some spent casings that don’t match the bullets we found,” Fontenot said. “To me it appears gunfire was going both ways. We don’t have the other vehicle and it appears gun fire was going both ways.”
The father of the 7-year-old shot on June 6 was at the residence where the car was found Tuesday, he said. Also at the residence was the man who had been released from the hospital after being shot June 6.
“I don’t think this is over,” Fontenot said.
“The are shooting at each other running down the street, that puts everybody in danger of stray bullets,” he said.
Fontenot believes adults and drugs are behind the shootings.
“They are getting these kids to do their dirty work,” he said.
