Church Point man charged with 6 counts in shooting

Body

A 34-year-old Church Point man has been arrested on six counts of attempted second-degree murder in connection with a domestic disturbance.
St. Landry Parish Sheriff Bobby Guidroz said Joseph Berchman Robert Jr., of the 100 block of Chachere Road, faces the attempted murder charges and a simple criminal damage from the Aug. 3 incident.
Guidroz said deputies responded to Miller Road in the Opelousas area regarding a shooting complaint.
The investigation revealed that the female victim and Robert began to argue inside the vehicle they were occupying.  The victim then exited the vehicle and began to walk down the street. A motorist that was driving down Miller road stopped to pick up the victim. Robert then exited his vehicle, walked to the driver’s door, and began firing at the other vehicle striking it, Guidroz said.
The driver had three infants and a teenager inside her vehicle, he said. She then drove away.
Robert got back into his vehicle and followed the fleeing vehicle to her home, he said.  Once she parked her vehicle, the victim ran back to Robert’s vehicle to stop the confrontation, he said.
Robert drove away in an unknown direction.
Later deputies located Robert arrested him and took him to the parish jail where he was booked on related charges.
Guidroz added, “The other driver that picked up the victim was identified as a female friend that knew the victim and was merely offering her a ride. Detectives are looking into adding additional charges on Robert Jr.”
