A Eunice community meeting, “Community Forum Building Our Future,” was held Wednesday in the Eunice High School auditorium to discuss upcoming bond propositions and the future of St. Landry Parish schools.
On hand were Superintendent Patrick Jenkins, along with some School Board members, and Lyn Kenley, program manager of Volkert Inc., a consultant to Board.
Jenkins presented an overview about St. Landry Parish schools, its website, and where and how to find details and facts about the schools, all areas and phases of each school, structures, and the upcoming details of the bond propositions.
The forum meeting was attended by a group of parents, teachers and principals. Prior to the meeting each attendee was given a hand-out detailed outlined pamphlet about the bond propositions, and an index card and pen. The index card and pen provided was to encourage each person to write down their questions and concerns, and at the conclusion of the meeting, Jenkins answered their individual questions.
On March 24, voters of St. Landry Parish School District will vote on whether to authorize the district to have a $99 million bond proposition (12.1 mills) to fund St. Landry Parish School Board’s Facilities Master Plan (capital improvements). Voters will also be asked to consider 11.3 mills that would generate roughly $7 million a year for 10 years to supplement other revenues used for salaries of teachers and all other staff employed by St. Landry Parish School District.
Both have to pass for either to be implemented.
There has not been a property tax passed in SLP since 1986. The buildings are maintained by the St. Landry Parish School District operating budget, but they are structurally aging and need major renovations, the pamphlet stated.
