Security at St. Landry Parish public schools is under review, said Patrick Jenkins, superintendent.
Administrators are doing walk-throughs of schools with school resource officers or local police to assess security, he said at a School Board meeting Thursday.
Jenkins said in rural areas the St. Landry Parish Sheriff provides security for schools. In municipalities security is handled by local police.
A task force is being formed on school security, he said.
“Our goal is in the next month or so is to have an active shooter training that would impact the whole parish,” he said.
Jenkins said the school system has had bomb threats in the past.
“This is a felony when they make these types of bomb threats,” he said.
Principals have a wand to detect weapons, he said.
Also at the meeting Thursday, which included a discussion of a school building plan, consultant Lyn Kenley of Volkert said security is going to be a high priority of any project.
Kenley suggested the school system looked into security issues at all of its facilities.
After the Parkland, Florida, school shooting security has became an issue for many people, he said.
Issues concerning security, he said, include: access control, cameras, containment of people entering a building and shutdown systems.
