Police: Man waiting trial for running over man, found drunk and behind the wheel

Body

Almost two years ago, Derrick Lynn Mott, 29, of Eunice, was charged with striking a man on South East Street with his brand-new 2017 Ford F-250 pickup truck.
Zechariah Hose Freeman, 20, of Eunice, was injured and taken to a Lafayette hospital for injuries he suffered in the Dec. 16, 2016, collision.
On Monday, Police said Mott, of the 2700 block of Aymond Street, was driving on La. 13 near the police department without his lights when a police unit signaled him to stop, Sgt. Nicholas Cooley said.
Mott turned right on West Ash Avenue at the police station and stopped at about 9 p.m.
Mott tested 0.358 grams blood alcohol content on a breath test, Cooley said.
The legal limit is 0.08 blood alcohol content.
Police Chief Randy Fontenot said a 0.40 blood alcohol content usually renders a person comatose and may result in death.
Mott was charged with DWI second offense, driving under suspension for certain offenses and when lighted lamps required.
Mott’s charges from the 2016 incident are not resolved.
After Mott was released after Monday’s arrest, it was discovered there was a warrant for his arrest for failure to appear in district court on the earlier charges.
In the 2016 incident, Freeman was found lying on the shoulder of South East Street on a Friday afternoon. Freeman was breathing, but was not responsive, he said.
While the officer was on the scene, the driver of the suspect vehicle, a 2017 Ford F-250 pickup truck, returned to the scene, Fontenot said.
The police chief said the pickup truck was traveling north on South East Street when the incident occurred.
The truck, which Fontenot said had been purchased the previous day, had damage to the front hood and bumper.
Police obtained a video from a nearby business, which indicated the pickup truck was traveling at a high rate of speed Fontenot said.
The driver told police he left the scene to return a rental vehicle. A standard field sobriety test was done and suggested Mott was impaired, he said.
Mott refused to take a breath test, Fontenot said.
In the 2016 incident, Mott was charged with hit and run, driving under the influence first offense, first-degree vehicular injury and unlawful refusal to submit to chemical test, according to police records.
