School Board panel rejects charter school

he St. Landry Parish School Board’s Executive Committee is recommending the full board reject a charter school application for Opelousas.
The School Board is scheduled to meet at 5 p.m. Thursday in Opelousas.
An evaluation team advised the committee to reject the application as a Type I Charter School. As a Type 1 charter, the school would have reported to the parish School Board.
Debbie Faul, who represents St. Landry Charter School, said the school will seek a Type 2 charter from the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education. Under a Type 2 charter the school would operate independent of the parish school board.
Faul said state evaluators cited strengths in the applications that were found to be weaknesses by district evaluators.
After the April 12 School Board where a French immersion school charter application was approved, the group from Sunset said it would seek a Type 2 charter.
The group said a cap on enrollment from St. Landry Parish would not allow the charter school to succeed.
