A Lafayette man faces several charges after pulling vehicle door handles escalated to a high-speed chase and a crash in Eunice on Monday morning.
Eunice Police Chief Randy Fontenot said police were called at 7:15 a.m. about an attempted burglary at Walmart.
The call was about a man pulling on vehicle door handles.
“He did get into one vehicle,” Fontenot said.
When police arrived, the man got into a Mercury Marquis and fled east on U.S. 190 toward Eunice at speeds in excess of 70 mph.
The suspect slowed as he got into traffic, but wrecked with two other vehicles at 8th and Laurel Avenue (U.S. 190), he said.
The wreck is logged at 7:25 a.m.
There minor injuries in the wreck and one person was taken to Acadian Medical Center for treatment, he said.
The vehicle had been stolen in Lafayette on Sunday, Fontenot said.
Arrested was Sebastian Brey Sonnier, 32, 1300 block of Pont des Mouton, Lafayette. He is charged with simple burglary, aggravated flight in a vehicle, illegal possession of stolen things valued $5,000 to $24,999 (the car), and two counts of negligent injuring, and two counts of attempted simple burglary.
Sonnier is also believed to be the person who tried the door on an occupied vehicle parked the Holiday Inn Express, Fontenot.
The couple in the car moved on to Walmart where they observed a man pulling on vehicle doors and called police, he said.
