Crash kills Basile man on U.S. 190

Maritan Romero, 56, of Basile, died after the moped he was driving was involved in a crash with a car on U.S. 190 near LA 3068 in Evangeline Parish at about 10 p.m. Jan. 1, according to a Louisiana State Police Troop I news release.
 
Romero was traveling west in the right lane on U.S. 190 on a 2018 Cabo Cruiser electric moped, police said. At the same time, 21-year-old Teresa Henry, of Eunice, was traveling west in a 1999 Pontiac Bonneville and struck the moped from behind, police said.
Romero was ejected from the moped and came to rest in the north ditch.

Despite wearing a DOT approved helmet, Romero sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash, police said.. Romero was pronounced deceased at the scene by a representative from the Evangeline Parish Coroner’s Office. Impairment is not suspected at this time but standard toxicology results are pending, police said.
