A Church Point man has been accused of murder in the fatal shooting of his brother here Friday morning.
Elvin Moore, 65, of Church Point, was arrested by the Church Point Police on a charge of second-degree murder.
According to a news release from the Church Point Police, about 4 a.m. July 26, the police received a call of an ambulance needed at a residence in the 300 block of North Franques Street.
Police Chief Dale Thibodeaux said that when officers arrived at the home, they located Joseph Moore, 68, who was confined to a wheelchair due to previously having his right leg amputated, inside the residence with a single gun shot wound to the chest.
Thibodeaux said Acadian Ambulance personnel attempted to revive Moore but were unsuccessful.
An initial investigation revealed that both Elvin Moore and Joseph Moore resided at the home where the shooting occurred.
“At this time, the investigation revealed that the brothers got into a verbal argument which led to the shooting,” Thibodeaux explained.
Thibodeaux said the department’s initial investigation also led to the recovery of a .22-caliber rifle reportedly used in the shooting.
Elvin Moore was arrested at the scene shortly after officers arrived. He was taken to the Church Point Police Department and booked on the second-degree murder charge. He was then transported to the Acadia Parish Jail, and his bail was set at $300,000 by 15th Judicial District Judge Kristian Earles.
As of Monday morning, Moore remained in the Acadia Parish Jail.
The investigation of the shooting is ongoing.
The last murder in Church Point occurred in 2016, according to Thibodeaux.
