Police: He threatened them, then they pulled him out from underneath a house

Body

Steven Savoy II had threatened to harm police, but when Eunice Police went searching for him Monday afternoon they eventually found him hiding under a house, Eunice Police Lt. Ryan Young said.
Savoy, 30, of the 1500 block of Duralde Highway, Eunice, was wanted on Eunice and Evangeline Parish warrants and was believed to be at 901 Alexandre Street, Young said.
Eunice Police, city marshals and St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s deputies responded to the site at about 4 p.m.
There were three males in the yard when officers arrived, he said. Two males ran into house and a third exited the back door.
“The homeowner stated Mr. Savoy had recently arrived on his property and made comments that he was ready to do harm to police and was supposedly armed with at least two handguns,” Young said.
Witnesses said Savoy was at the residence.
“All occupants were exiting the residence as officers arrived,” he said.
The rental house was surrounded and an attempt was made to contact Savoy by cell phone to ask him to surrender.
“Subject did not or refused to make contact with officers,” he said.
‘At that point St. Landry Sheriff’s Office SWAT team was contacted to assist due to the violent crimes, his past violent crimes, and his statements of doing harm to police along with being armed,” Young said.
About 5:30 p.m. a SWAT unit that included Eunice Police and parish deputies entered the residence, he said.
The bottom floor was searched and Savoy was not found, he said. The second floor and attic also were searched and still no Savoy.
Irritant gas was dispersed in an attempt to dislodge Savoy, he said.
“Multiple, complete detailed searches of the residence were conducted and officers finally located a split in the linoleum in an air conditioner closet ... ” he said.
A rotten spot in the floor allowed access to a space under the house, he said.
“With the help of infrared equipment and artificial light, the subject was finally located behind a concrete step. He was given numerous verbal commands to exit,” he said. “Subject finally began to comply and make his way to the outer edges of the residence where he was extricated and detained.”
No weapons were located on Savoy, he said. “However we do believe that has stashed a weapon somewhere either under or inside the residence.’
Police believe Savoy has a.380-caliber and 9mm semi-automatic pistols.
Young said Mamou Police had warrants on Savoy for drug and traffic violation, possession of a firearm by a felon and resisting an officer. Eunice Police wanted Savoy for resisting an officer, he said.
Savoy was taken to the Evangeline Parish Jail.
