The owners of Ruby’s Café beat Eunice Police to the scene of a burglar alarm that went off at about 2:45 a.m. Thursday, Police Chief Randy Fontenot said.
When police arrived they found the owners, a vehicle wrecked into the rear of the restaurant and an injured suspect.
Arrested was Desmon Williams, 23, 800 block of South Beulah Street, Eunice. He is charged with attempted simple burglary.
“When officers got there the suspect was outside the building lying on the ground. The restaurant owners’ vehicle was inside the store,” Fontenot said.
“It had hit the back wall of the store and significant damage was done to the building,” he said.
Driving the 2018 Volvo XC90 was Curt Fontenot and the passenger was Dwayne Vidrine, he said. They were not injured, he said.
Fontenot said it was unclear what happened, but the car was inside the kitchen area when police arrived.
The driver said he lost control of the vehicle and ran into the building.
Fontenot said it had been raining and the area behind the restaurant was muddy.
“The owners say he was inside the restaurant, inside the kitchen area, when they got there, but he was struck by the car or something inside the building injuring a leg. He did suffer a broken leg,” he said of Williams.
“The suspect admitted to officers he was trying to break into the restaurant when the owners arrived,” he said.
Nothing was reported missing from the café, he said.
There was another burglary at Ruby’s a couple of weeks, which is being investigated, he said. Cash was taken in that burglary.
