A Port Barre man has been charged with the three counts of aggravated cruelty to animals after St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s detectives assisted animal control in reference to a loose horse on Dec. 6, according to Sheriff Bobby Guidroz.
When the deputies arrived at 1906 Bayou Road they discovered there were eight dog kennels located on the property.
Guidroz said inside the kennels were two dog carcasses. There were five extremely malnourished dogs, which lacked proper food and shelter, he said. An additional kennel with another dog carcass and a horse carcass were located on the property as well, he said.
Khalil Thomas, 23, of the 200 block of Bellanise Road, Port Barre, arrived on scene and told the officers that he was the owner of all animals on the property, Guidroz said.
Thomas was taken to the Criminal Investigation Division for questioning where he admitted to knowing about the three deceased dogs and one deceased horse on the property, Guidroz said. Thomas stated the horse and dogs died two to four weeks ago, and he has been unable to provide adequate amount of food, water, and shelter for the animals, Guidroz said.
“I would like to thank the person who brought this to the animal shelter’s attention. Working with the witness and the St. Landry Parish Animal Shelter, Thomas was arrested, and the dogs were taken out of that environment.” Anyone that has information on dog fighting and/or any animal abuse or neglect is urged to call St. Landry Crime Stoppers at 337-948-8477, or download the P3 app on your mobile device to submit your anonymous tips. You could earn up to a $1,000 cash reward,”Guidroz said.
Thomas was taken to the parish jail. He has paid $7,500 in bail.
