Oil/gas drilling activity, interest growing in area

ConocoPhillips is making a play in Louisiana’s portion of the Austin Chalk formation, raising the prospect of a resurgence of onshore drilling activity in the state. Some reports claim the the Houston-based oil company’s effort could be focused in the Simmesport area.

In the Bunkie area, people are watching an oil well being drilled in nearby south Rapides Parish, where the BlackBrush oil company has started “fracking” in a well it has drilled there.

If the production from the well is good, it could open the Bunkie area up for more drilling.

Vermilion Parish School employee insurance claims climbing

Three months into the calender year, Chris Hebert, an insurance agent with Dwight Andrus Insurance, informed the school board that claims are $764,000 more than the same time last year.
Hebert gave a power point presentation to the Vermilion Parish School Board and a packed house on Thursday. He showed the board the good and bad numbers dealing with health insurance.
Hebert showed the financial numbers for January through March of 2017 and 2018. In every category, the financial numbers are higher.

The Calliham Plantation Commissary in Hamburg was built in the 1830s or 1840s and is one of the few remaining Antebellum buildings in the parish.

Effort begins to create Des Glaises Cultural District

A state-certified cultural district in southeast Avoyelles could become a reality in the near future, providing one more weapon in the parish’s arsenal for attracting more tourists.

The Bayou Des Glaises Cultural District received resolutions of support from the Avoyelles Police Jury and the Town of Simmesport this past week. The Village of Moreauville is expected to follow suit at a special meeting later this month.

Deville man pleads guilty to owning unregistered silencer

Jonathan Hayes, 32, of Deville pleaded guilty to possession of an unregistered firearm in U.S. District Court on April 16.

U.S. Attorney David C. Joseph said Hayes admitted to owning a silencer that had not been registered.

Louisiana Department of Wildlife & Fisheries agents arrested Hayes on June 1, 2016, in the Camp Beauregard Wildlife Management Area in Rapides Parish. He had a Ruger .22 caliber rifle, a Savage .22 caliber rifle and a firearm silencer.

Police: Suspect fled from officers in vehicle

A 24-year-old Morgan City man was booked into jail Monday following a vehicle chase, and Morgan City police learned that the suspect had borrowed the vehicle but never returned it, Police Chief James Blair said in a news release.

—Deven W. Vining, 24, of Pecos Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 2:52 p.m. Monday on charges of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, flight from an officer and no driver’s license.
