Fontenot: a coach, father, friend

He was a coach before he was a father, but both are combined to make Wayne Fontenot who he is today.
A 1990 graduate of Eunice High, Fontenot returned to be a part of the Bobcat Nation in 2015.
Fontenot is the head coach of both women’s volleyball and basketball teams and also teaches biology at Eunice High.
He is also an assistant coach in both football and baseball where he could spend time with his sons.
“I knew I wanted to be a coach since my junior year of high school,” Fontenot said.
“Coach Clarence Merricks had a major part of my decision.

New life for old St. Ed’s gym

For over 80 years it has stood majestically in the midst of the St. Edmund campus and a fundraiser is underway to help the historic gymnasium be renovated and restored to its former glory.
Construction began on July 10, 1939, at a cost of $18,200 and the building was completed in November of that year.
The building included seven classrooms, a large stage along with the hardwood court needed for boxing and basketball.

Teams return to the field

Area football teams hit the practice fields this week for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic stopped spring sports on March 16.
Eunice High trainer Kyle Vincent said the football team is following the state’s guidelines with social distancing.
Vincent said EHS is using St. Landry Parish School Board’s Phase One rules with each coach manning a station of nine players.
“We are required to do a daily temperature check of every kid,” he said. “They have to sign a COVID form.
