Big Boy passes through Eunice

Train buffs and the curious gathered along the tracks in Eunice as Big Boy No. 4014, the famed Union Pacific steam locomotive built in the 1940s to conquer mountains while carrying equipment in support of World War II, passed through Eunice on Thursday. The scenes are near the La. 13 crossing.

Voter registration week begins Monday

Secretary of State Kyle Ardoin is joining registrars of voters across the state the week of Aug. 23 to 27 to hold Voter Registration Week activities aimed at registering Louisiana citizens to vote. The St. Landry Parish Registrar of Voters Office will hold voter registration events on Aug.

UL Lafayette laying the groundwork for outdoor ‘urban prairie’ classroom

The University of Louisiana at Lafayette is sowing the seeds for an outdoor classroom for learning and research about storm water runoff erosion management, native grasses and plants, bees and other pollinators, and soil quality.

St. Edmund schools open Monday

The Rev. Hampton Davis, pastor and principal of St. Edmund Catholic School, has announced that St. Edmund Elementary, junior high and high school campuses will have their first day of school Monday. The original date of St. Edmund’s first day of school for students was Aug. 11 with a noon dismissal.

More early voting sites proposed

More early voting sites is one proposal by St. Landry Parish President Jessie Bellard as a fix to the reduction of polling places. In a news release Bellard stated: “In 2019, the state asked local governments to look at consolidating precincts to save money on costly elections.

Workshop explores Eunice assets

How does Eunice develop its community anchors? And what are those anchors? A three-day workshop was held this week ending Wednesday to explore those questions and others. There are “tons of opportunity” in Eunice said host Caroline Dwyer of Renaissance Planning.

Accusations led to insults, which led to a physical altercation between two members of the Crowley City Council here Wednesday night. Vernon “Step” Martin and Lyle Fogleman were each escorted out of the council chambers after insulting each other.
