Crews were out Wednesday cleaning the concrete portion of the drainage canal that begins south of Laurel Avenue at Nimitz Street, Eunice Mayor Scott Fontenot said the canal drains the U.S. 190 area. “A lot of underground drainage comes from the MLK / Laurel Avenue area into that gully.

St. Landry Parish President Jessie Bellard said, “We are prepared for the worst and hoping for the best” as Hurricane Ida approached. As Ida made landfall Sunday in southeast Louisiana hammering Grand Isle and everything north of there, St. Landry got the best of the storm. “We did great.

COVID shuts down Port Barre schools

The COVID test positivity rate for St. Landry Parish was 11.7% for the week of Aug. 12 to 18, down from 12.5% for Aug. 5 to 11. But a COVID-19 outbreak at Port Barre High and Middle schools closed them Thursday as students return to virtual learning until Sept. 7. St.

Jobless, workforce numbers improve in July report

Tri-Parish unemployment rates were down and the workforce was up in July compared to a year ago, according to statistics released Friday by the Louisiana Workforce Commission. The workforce for St. Landry, Acadia and Evangeline parishes totaled 67,990 in July, up 2,940 or 4.5% from July 2020.

Louisiana braces for Hurricane Ida

The National Weather Service forecast on Friday morning put Hurricane Ida’s landfall between Intracoastal City and Grand Isle on Sunday. But it was too soon to know for certain. Earlier Friday morning the landfall was predicted between Morgan City and New Orleans as a Category 3 hurricane.
