Tri-Parish workforce down 712 workers

The Tri-Parish workforce shed 712 people in the workforce in July compared to July 2018, according to not seasonally adjusted numbers from the Bureau of Labor and Statistics released Friday.
St. Landry, Acadia and Evangeline parishes’ workforce totaled 68,687 in July, down from 69,399 in July 2018.
The workforce count includes both those employed and seeking a job.
The Evangeline Parish workforce dropped by 2% in July compared to a year ago. The July workforce was 11,915, down 245 from July 2018.
In St. Landry Parish, the July workforce totaled 32,433, down 0.9% or 295 from July 2018.
In Acadia Parish, the July workforce was 24,339, down 0.7% or 172 workers from July 2018.
The workforce count has been trending down this year, according to statistics released through the Louisiana Workforce Commission.
The state workforce totaled $2,119,10 in July, down 0.7% or 15,940 from July 2018.
For instance, in June the Tri-Parish workforce dropped 383 workers from June 2018 and in May the workforce was down 297 from May 2018.
July unemployment rates by parish were:
— St. Landry Parish, 6.6 percent, down from 7.3 percent in July 2018 and up from 6.8 percent in June.
— Acadia Parish, 5.5 percent, down from 7 percent in July 2018 and down from 5.8 percent in June.
— Evangeline Parish, 6.8 percent, down from 7.4 percent June 2018 and up from 6.7 percent in June.
The state’s not seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in July was 5.2%, down from 5.7% in July 2018.
Since June, Louisiana’s not seasonally adjusted unemployment rate decreased from 5.3 percent to 5.2 percent.
The number of not seasonally adjusted unemployed individuals decreased by 11,081 from 121,375 in July 2018 to 110,294 in July. Since, the number of not seasonally adjusted unemployed individuals has decreased by 2,860.
For the fifth straight month, all metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs) experienced unemployment rate declines over the year. None of the nine MSAs saw an increase in their not seasonally adjusted unemployment rates from June 2019. Preliminary not seasonally adjusted July unemployment rates for the nine MSAs are as follows:
— Alexandria: 5.7 percent, unchanged from June, but down from 6.2 percent in July 2018.
— Baton Rouge: 4.8 percent, down from 4.9 percent in June and down from 5.2 percent in July 2018.
— Hammond: 6.1 percent, down from 6.2 percent in June and down from 6.5 percent in July 2018.
— Houma: 4.9 percent, down from 5.2 percent in June and down from 5.5 percent in July 2018.
— Lafayette: 5 percent, down from 5.2 percent in June and down from 5.6 percent in July 2018.
— Lake Charles: 4.2 percent, down from 4.3 percent in June and down from 4.4 percent in July 2018.
— Monroe: 5.7 percent, down from 5.8 percent in June and down from 5.9 percent in July 2018.
— New Orleans: 4.8 percent, down from 5 percent in June and down from 5.5 percent in July 2018.
— Shreveport: 5.5 percent, down from 5.7 percent in June and down from 5.9 percent in July 2018.
