New Life Pregnancy Center ribbon-cutting

A ribbon cutting for the New Life Pregnancy Center located at 1415 Seventh St. in Mamou along with a banquet fundraiser was held Tuesday. Over 175 people were in attendance and more than $10,000 was raised from the banquet along with a donation from St. Edmund High School.

Notary exam prep course moved to weekends at SLCC

Registration is open at South Louisiana Community College for a Notary Exam Prep course for the 2020 exam. SLCC moved the Lafayette course to the weekend in response to working adults wanting the opportunity to enroll in the course. The Notary Exam Prep course will be held on Saturdays from 9 a.m.

Eunice Police believe shots traded near apartments

At least two people traded shots near the Sunrise Apartment complex Wednesday, according to Eunice Police Chief Randy Fontenot. Police received a call from someone in the 700 block of South Beulah at about 7:45 p.m. reporting about 15 shots being fired.

Parish Council budget sees end to borrowing

The St. Landry Parish Council approved a 2020 budget that provides a 5% pay raise for its employees at a special meeting Thursday in Opelousas. The raise is a first for about 100 employees in 12 to 15 years, according to Amanda Cain, finance director.

Mayor talks about expensive gas line issue after break

About two blocks on the north side of Laurel Avenue between 8th and 9th streets was evacuated after a gas line ruptured about 9:15 a.m. Thursday. There were no injuries reported in the incident.
