Elderly, beware: Scams on rise

A phone scammer made a mistake when he called my mother. The young male caller pretended to be her grandson. He said he’d been arrested for fishing on an Indian reservation - unaware he was breaking the law — and needed bail money so a judge wouldn’t throw him in jail.

Broadhurst to receive the Leaders In Philanthropy Award in Nov.

Tri-Parish workforce declines slightly

The Tri-Parish workforce declined by 0.5 percent in June compared to June 18, according to not seasonally adjusted numbers from the Bureau of Labor and Statistics. The June workforce was 69,273, down 383 from the count a year ago. The workforce count includes both those employed and seeking a job.

Police: Brother killed brother

A Church Point man has been accused of murder in the fatal shooting of his brother here Friday morning. Elvin Moore, 65, of Church Point, was arrested by the Church Point Police on a charge of second-degree murder. According to a news release from the Church Point Police, about 4 a.m.
