Iota Volunteer Fire Department dedicates new truck

The Iota Volunteer Fire Department held a dedication ceremony June 10 for its new rescue truck. The ceremony was held at the Volunteer Fire Department on South First Street, and the community was invited to attend.

More security now needed at Vermilion school meetings

Security has now tripled at Vermilion Parish School Board meetings over the last five years. Five years ago there was no need for security. Two years ago one security officer was added. At the next board meeting, there is expected to be three security officers on location.

Payment plan reached to fix tax error

A state tax error is costing St. Landry Parish Government $300,000 that it must pay to Grand Coteau in payments through February 2023. Video poker revenue that the state was supposed to send to the town of Grand Coteau ended up being paid to St.

Former Eunice man killed in plane crash

A former Eunice resident is one of two Acadiana men killed after the single-engine plane they were flying in crashed on a levee June 12. St. Landry Parish Sheriff Bobby Guidroz confirmed the pilot, 49-year-old Kirk Bellard, and passenger, 38-year-old Marcus D.

Rice price is promising

An LSU AgCenter economist had good news for rice farmers at the Vermilion Parish rice field day on June 11. “Optimism is high that with recaptured market share in core markets, the outlook for rice is positive from a price standpoint,” said Michael Deliberto.

Staff cuts posed in school budget

St. Landry Parish School Board members held the first of three meetings scheduled to study the school system’s 2019-2020 budget. Six Board members met Thursday at the School Board office, 1013 E. Creswell Lane, Opelousas, to hear a briefing on the budget from Tressa Miller, finance director.
