Area waterways named in fish advisories

Nine bodies of waters, including several in the Eunice area, are named in a fish consumption advisory warning. Thee most recent advisories from the departments of Health, Environmental Quality and Wildlife and Fisheries include one new warning and updates to eight previously issued warnings.

Eunice Police hold school supply drive

The Eunice Police Department is holding a school supply drive to aid teachers in the community to receive necessary items for their classrooms and alleviate their out of pocket expenses. Supply donations can be dropped at the Eunice Police Department in the front lobby.

Witnesses, information sought about homicide

Crime Stoppers of Acadia Parish needs the public’s help to solve a homicide. Crowley Police responded to a homicide in the 1800 block of JD Miller St. in Crowley at about 1:30 a.m. July 21, according to the Crime Stoppers news release.

Baltakis announces candidacy for Ward 1 alderman

Dr. Tony Baltakis has announced he will run for alderman in Ward 1 in the Nov. 6 election. His announcement follows. Baltakis has lived in Eunice, with his wife Donna, for 21 years. He is a professor of history at LSU Eunice. Baltakis served two terms as Faculty Senate chair.

School Board likely to end year eroding its reserve balance

The St. Landry Parish School Board ended its fiscal year with a $2.1 million loss in its general fund. In a report delivered to the Board’s Finance Committee in Opelousas on Wednesday, the school system had general fund expenses of $128,767 million, which was over the budget of $115,821.
