Site found for monument

A site off Gradnigo Island Road northwest of Opelousas has been found for the Confederate monument now on the St. Landry Parish Courthouse grounds, said Parish President Jessie Bellard. The Sons of the Confederacy determined the site and he expects the monument to be moved in the next month.

Chief: Clues numerous in one-man crime spree

A 52-year-old Crowley man left a trail of clues as he committed numerous break-ins on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, according to Eunice Police Chief Randy Fontenot. Chris J. Sonnier, of the 24200 block of Crowley Eunice Highway, was arrested by Eunice Police on Wednesday for simple burglary.

Hoychick won’t seek re-election as city judge

Eunice City Judge Terry Hoychick declared, “No. I’m not running again!” when he spoke at the Eunice Rotary Club’s Wednesday meeting. Hoychick took office as Eunice city judge on Jan. 1, 2015.

GOP lawmakers invoke ‘precedence’ to stall on 2nd Black congressional district

A proposed Louisiana congressional map with two majority Black districts failed to advance Thursday from a state Senate committee after Republicans insisted on honoring a procedural tradition of letting the bill lay over for 24 hours.

Dr. Stearns appointed interim parish coroner

Dr. Zebediah Stearns was appointed interim St. Landry Parish coroner during the Parish Council meeting on Wednesday. The Council also set an election on Nov. 8 for the coroner’s position. Coroner Russell Pavich died on Jun 10 after serving 26 years. Stearns said, “I appreciate your confidence in me.

Police: Horseplay led to shooting

A 19-year-old male was shot in the leg in a case of horseplay, according to Eunice Police Chief Randy Fontenot. “He was playing with a gun and obviously had no business playing with it. He dropped the magazine out it and still had a round left in the chamber,” Fontenot said.

Eunice Police seek suspect in double homicide

Eunice Police responded to a shooting at a convenience store at the intersection of West Maple Avenue and Boudreaux Street at 8:01 p.m. Thursday to find the bodies of two young men in the parking lot. Both died of gunshot wounds. Both were pronounced dead at the scene by a representative of the St.
