School performance scores increase

The Louisiana Department of Education (LDOE) released 2024 performance scores for the state’s public schools and systems today.

Eunice hospital district abolished

An ordinance to abolish St. Landry Parish Hospital Service District 1 passed the Parish Council on Wednesday without opposition. At a public hearing, prior to the Council meeting, Ernest Blanchard, Council member, asked about leases the hospital district may have had.

Sheriff praises trusty dorm, says cost-sharing deal near

Housing prisoners cost St. Landry Parish about $100,000 a month — $1.2 million a year — and it is an expense that isn’t going away. In October at a Parish Council meeting it sounded like Parish President Jessie Bellard and Sheriff Bobby Guidroz were at odds over the prisoner issue.

Tax deal raises sales tax from 4.45% to 5%

State lawmakers have agreed to a pared-down version of Gov. Jeff Landry’s tax overhaul package but one that would still affect most people and businesses in Louisiana. The deal, hashed out in back-room negotiations Thursday, was expected to receive full approval Friday.
