A 14-year-old boy is dead and an 18-year-old is in jail following a shooting in Church Point Tuesday night.
Sheriff K.P. Gibson said the Acadia Parish Sheriff’s Office, in conjunction with Church Point Police conducted an investigation into the incident in the corporate limits of Church Point.
According to police reports, officers responded to South McMillan and East Ebey streets shortly after 7 p.m.
Investigators determined two victims were shot at multiple times by a pair of suspects while walking.
The 14-year-old was struck and was taken by air to an area hospital. He died Wednesday afternoon of his injuries.
The sheriff’s office was asked by city police to lead the investigation, according to Gibson.
The identity of the juvenile killed has not been released by law enforcement.
Nicholas Ardoin, 18, of Church Point, was arrested Wednesday afternoon and initially charged with two counts of attempted second-degree murder and aggravated criminal damage to property.
Gibson confirmed one count of attempted second-degree murder will be amended to second-degree murder following the teen’s death.
Bond on Ardoin has been set at $510,000.
A second suspect, a juvenile, is being questioned in this matter, Gibson said.
“When we have something like this happen, it is common for the sheriff’s office and the police department to work together in a joint investigation,” said Church Point Police Chief Dale Thibodeaux.
In the last few weeks, the Church Point Police investigated two other, separate incidents of shots fired within the town, and arrests were made following those reports. No injuries were reported in those incidents.
Anyone with any information regarding Tuesday night’s incident is urged to call detectives at 788-8721 or Crime Stoppers of Acadia Parish at 789-8477.
The investigation is continuing.
“I want everyone to know that when shots are fired in the city limits of Church Point, it will be investigated fully, and we will charge those responsible,” Thibodeaux said.
