District 5-1A list released

Five St. Edmund Lady Jays were selected as part of the 5-1A All-District basketball team.
St. Edmund junior Gabby Fontenot was voted to the first team as the Lady Jays finished in a a four-way tie for second place behind district champion North Central.
Other first team members including North Central’s Quaniqa Joseph and Tricia Tyler along with Kennedy Broussard from Catholic High of Pointe Coupee and Westminster’s Andrea Bradley.
Joseph was selected as the District MVP.

Lady Cats rally in thriller

Eunice High’s Katelyn Joubert ripped a double to score Destiny Edwards in the bottom of the seventh as the Lady Bobcats earned a 8-7 walk-off win Tuesday over the Port Barre Lady Devils.
Trailing 7-3 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, the Lady Cats began their comeback surge.
Joubert doubled, Amber Arvie was hit by a pitch and Morgan Domingue singled to load the bases.
Cassidy Thomas then blasted a grand-slam home run over the centerfield wall to force a 7-7 tie and set up the next inning’s thrilling finish.

Lady Jays grab 5-1 win

For four innings it was a defensive struggle between Westgate and St. Edmund.
Then the Lady Jays exploded for five runs in the bottom of the fifth frame as St. Edmund earned a 5-1 win.
The Lady Jays’ scoring surge began when Allison Lafleur singled and Abby Miller reached on an error before a triple to right by Kelli Richard cleared the bases.
Richard scored on a single by Gabby Fontenot to push the Lady Jays ahead, 3-0.

Lady Jays head to state meet

They have already made history as the first girls power lifting team at St. Edmund.
But seniors Mallory Allain, Lucy Brown, Kathryn Leger along with junior Blaire Allain want to leave their mark in the school’s record books.
“When people ask us how long we have been doing this,” Mallory said. “We tell them proudly that this is our first year.”
The four Lady Jays have qualified for the LHSAA state power lifting championships that begin Friday at Fant-Ewing Coliseum on the UL-Monroe campus.

Blue Jays win, Bobcats stumble in tourney opener

St. Edmund cruised to a 9-5 win over Pine Prairie in their opening game of the John R. Young Chevrolet/Frey Holding Company Baseball Tournament at Blue Jay Field.
St. Edmund grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning when Michael Zaunbrecher singled and scored on a double by Austin Gradney.
Pine Prairie exploded for four runs in the top of the third frame to grab its only lead of the game.
Jordan Ardoin, Nick Ortego and Sylas Carson all singled to load the bases.
Cole Thomas ripped a triple to clear the bases but was put out attempting to steal home.
