McGovern wins assessor’s race

Sherri Zeringue McGovern defeated Blair Briggs to win election as St. Landry Parish Assessor. McGovern won 60% of the 28,853 votes cast in Saturday’s election, according to complete but unofficial returns. McGovern will succeed Ryhn Duplechain who has served 33 years as assessor.

More than 7,500 early votes cast in St. Landry Parish

There were 7,549 votes cast in early voting in St. Landry Parish ahead of Saturday’s election. There 1,143 early votes cast at poll in the Eunice Municipal Complex. That compares to 4,092 early votes cast in the November 2015 election — an 84% increase in early voting this year.

Candidates file final pre-election finance reports

Candidates in Saturday’s primary election have filed their final campaign finance reports. The first of the reports were due Sept. 12 — 30 days before the election. The reports show how much money they raised, and from whom, and how much they have spent.

45% St. Landry Parish voter turnout predicted for Saturday

Tri-Parish voter turnout ranged from a low of 9.5% in St. Landry Parish to a high of 15% in Evangeline Parish in early voting that ended Saturday. Cheryl Milburn, St. Landry Parish registrar of voters, predicted 45% of the voters will turnout Saturday. In Acadia Parish, 10.

Voter signup drives planned at schools

A voter registration drive is to begin Tuesday in St. Landry Parish that will include public high schools and nursing homes. Cheryl Milburn, registrar of voters, released a schedule that coincides with a the state Voter Registration Week.

Qualifying for the Oct. 12 election began Tuesday and continues until 4:30 p.m. Thursday. The deadline to register to vote in person or by mail is Sept. 11.
