Council votes to end deputy chief position

The Eunice Board of Aldermen voted to abolish the job of deputy chief in the Eunice Police Department. And it is likely the Board will not fill an open lieutenant’s job in the department.

Aldermen approve Liberty revival

The Liberty Theater is poised for a renewal after the Board of Aldermen approved Mayor Scott Fontenot to complete an agreement with a non-profit. Cajun musician Joel Savoy spoke at the Tuesday’s Board of Aldermen’s meeting. Savoy leads The Association for the Liberty Theatre of Eunice.

Feeding program wants to use Southeast Center

Eunice Mayor Scott Fontenot is to negotiate a request from the Rev. Kayla Givs to use the Southeast Community Center seven days a week for an after-school feeding program. Givs is pastor of Restoring God’s Glory Ministries Inc.

Eunice city meeting cancellled

Mayor Scott Fontenot has cancelled the monthly Eunice council meeting, which would be held on April 14 citing the emergency situation due to the coronavirus COVID-19.

Board strips chief of hiring, firing authority

Eunice aldermen revoked Eunice Police Chief Randy Fontenot’s sole power to hire and fire police department employees. The unanimous voice vote at Tuesday’s city meeting, attended by a capacity crowd, reverses the Board of Aldermen giving the chief appointive authority in July 2016.

Agenda light for new Board members

The agenda for Tuesday’s Board of Aldermen meeting, as of Thursday, was fairly light for two new members. Chad Andrepont, Ward 1, and Ernest Blanchard, Ward 3, attended their first agenda meeting Thursday as aldermen.

Action taken on 5 properties to be cleaned up

Five properties in Eunice moved closer to a cleanup after Tuesday’s meeting of the Board of Aldermen and mayor. Two properties were given 30 days to get cleaned up. Those properties are 210 E. Oak St. and 571 Halsey St. Property at 580 Lewis Street is targeted for a Feb.

Eunice aldermen move to update aging fire truck fleet

The agenda item was not much more than a blink of an eye, but in that moment the Eunice Board of Aldermen cleared the way to update the city’s aging fire truck fleet. Mayor Scott Fontenot is to buy a new fire truck expected to cost about $400,000.

Aldermen OK 6-year plan for airport

A six-year, $3.4 million plan for improvements at the Eunice Airport was approved by the Board of Aldermen at a meeting Tuesday.  Drew Miller, airport manager, said, “Basically, when we do this the city of Eunice really doesn’t put up anything. It is all state and federal monies.

Properties are to be repaired or condemned

Eunice aldermen drew the line for three properties in the city to either be repaired or demolished at a meeting Tuesday at the Eunice Municipal Complex.
