Scientists find Deepwater Horizon oil in sparrows

Scientists have identified the first evidence of Deepwater Horizon oil in a land animal — the Seaside Sparrow. The scientists analyzed the diet and feathers of sparrows collected more than a year after the oil spill.

Expert says La. is in the crosshairs of climate change

Climate change, hurricanes and floods were hot topics during the Louisiana State University International Programs’ intercultural dialogue on weather, water and climate on Wednesday, with one presenter saying that whatever the extent of climate change will be Louisiana will be in the crosshairs.

Parish to pave 54 more roads

Fifty-four more roads are to be paved in the final phase of the Smooth Ride Home Program. St. Landry Parish President Bill Fontenot announced at a Parish Council meeting Wednesday that Prairie Contractors Inc., of Opelousas, was the apparent low bidder for Phase 3B. The company bid $7,890,083.

Bishop J. Douglas Deshotel has announced the appointment of Maureen Kirsch Fontenot as the new chancellor and assistant director of chancery personnel for the Diocese of Lafayette. The appointment is effective Monday.

St. Landry Parish schools get a C in state assessment

The St. Landry Parish School District received a C in school performance scores released by the state Department of Education. The district’s score edged up two points to 73.1 from its 2015 score, but that lagged behind neighboring parishes. Acadia and Evangeline parishes received Bs.
