A suspicious device found near the entrance of the Family Dollar Store in the Amy Shopping Center on East Laurel Avenue turned out to be harmless.
But before it was determined harmless, Eunice Police, firefighters, sheriff’s deputies, a bomb detection dog, and Louisiana State Police responded to the scene.
According to a news release from Police Chief Randy Fontenot, police and firefighters responded to a call at 7:11 p.m. Saturday reporting a suspicious device.
“A flashlight was located with what appeared to be some type of power supply attached to it and connected with wiring,” Fontenot stated.
“The St. Landry Parish Sheriff's Office was requested for the use of their bomb detection canine.  The canine did not alert on the device.  The Louisiana State Police responded with their robot.  The robot was used to remove the device to a safe location to be detonated,” he stated.
Two detonations were required and it was determined the device was harmless, he stated.
“Evidence was collected at the scene and the investigation is continuing.  It should be noted that no threats were called in to the store or the police,” Fontenot stated.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the Eunice Police Department at 337-457-2626.
