In the rural neighborhood around Ticheli Road, the sound of multiple gunshots erupted in the early morning quiet of July 13, 1960. Sam Brooks wasn’t sure why shots were being fired, but peeking out the front window of his home, the 9-year-old looked across the street where they came from.

Louisiana braces for Hurricane Ida

The National Weather Service forecast on Friday morning put Hurricane Ida’s landfall between Intracoastal City and Grand Isle on Sunday. But it was too soon to know for certain. Earlier Friday morning the landfall was predicted between Morgan City and New Orleans as a Category 3 hurricane.

Cleco encourages customers to prepare for Tropical Depression 9

Cleco is monitoring Tropical Depression Nine which is predicted to enter the northern or western Gulf of Mexico as a tropical storm or hurricane late this weekend or early next week. “Cleco is closely monitoring this storm,” said Clint Robichaux, manager of distribution operations support.

The St. Landry Parish Government is issuing sand bags for parish residents starting at 1 p.m. St. Landry Parish Government crews have begun filling sandbags to prepare for flooding of Tropical Depression 9. After 1 p.m. sandbags can be picked up at the Yambilee Building located at 1939 W. Landry St.

Storm likely to make landfall on Louisiana coast

The National Weather Service reports Tropical Depression 9 has formed in the west central Caribbean. It is expected to become a major hurricane (category 3 or stronger) before landfall on the Louisiana coast, sometime late Sunday or Monday.
