Darbonne announces candidacy for re-election as city marshal

Eunice City Marshal Terry J. Darbonne is a candidate for re-election in the Nov. 3 primary. A Eunice native and 1982 graduate of Eunice High School, Darbonne is the son of the late Howard and Agnes (Guidry) Darbonne. He has two children, Nicholas and Amber Darbonne.

August gardening means going slow

It’s August in Louisiana, and we don’t recommend doing much in the garden or, shall we say, not much in this heat. Right now, it’s enough of a chore to help our struggling plants survive. It’s best to stay on top of watering, preventing pests and removing weeds from garden beds.

Take-all patch creeping up in Louisiana lawns

Take-all patch, also known as take-all root rot, is causing problems in some Louisiana lawns. The fungus is frequently found in turfgrass roots without causing significant disease, said Raj Singh, LSU AgCenter plant doctor.

ELTL fall registration set The Eunice Ladies Tennis League (ELTL) will hold its fall registration, beginning Aug. 17 and will conclude on Aug. 28. Registration is $25 and will include 12 weeks of play with an end of season tennis banquet. The tennis league players play every Tuesday evening at 6 p.

Eunice native named principal at Basile High School

Eunice native Helana Francois was named Basile High School principal Aug. 5 at the meeting of the Evangeline Parish School Board. She replaces Tony Bertrand, who has been promoted to maintenance supervisor at the School Board office. Bertrand had served as the school’s leader since January 2014.

Firefighters get an app and you might be safer

The Eunice Fire Department recently acquired an application that probably makes us a bit safer. Fire Chief Mike Arnold said, “Nothing is foolproof, but this is pretty good. I’m impressed.” The application is Active 911 and firefighters here have been working with it since April.

Feeding program wants to use Southeast Center

Eunice Mayor Scott Fontenot is to negotiate a request from the Rev. Kayla Givs to use the Southeast Community Center seven days a week for an after-school feeding program. Givs is pastor of Restoring God’s Glory Ministries Inc.
