“This just in,” as we say in the news business. British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher recently called Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden to complain about President Donald Trump. This is indeed big news, mainly because Thatcher has been dead for six years.

Hurricane season: Do you feel lucky? Well, do ya?

It’s the kickoff for hurricane season and forecasters are predicting as many as 14 named storms with anywhere from three to six of these storms growing into major hurricanes. Here on the Gulf Coast, we certainly perk up when this time of year rolls around.

Last paddle wheeler was a grocery hauler

Paddle-wheel boats ran on the Louisiana bayous until the 1940s, although by that time most of them had been converted from steam power to diesel engines. Probably the last of them was the V.J. Kurzweg, which plied Bayou Teche at least to New Iberia and sometimes farther up the stream.

3 St. Landry deputies graduate from training

The St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office announced the graduation of three sheriff’s deputies from the 53rd session of St. Martin Sheriff’s Basic Training Academy. The police academy is 15 weeks of classes that instruct officers throughout the Acadiana area.

Senator changes course on diaper, tampon tax

After the Senate rejected his bid for a constitutional amendment to exempt diapers and tampons from the state sales tax, the bill’s sponsor, Sen. J.P. Morrell, found another way to get the job done.

Amazon, state’s community colleges plan collaboration for tech degrees

The Louisiana Community and Technical College System is partnering with Amazon Web Services to implement the tech company’s Educate curriculum, Gov. John Bel Edwards announced Wednesday. The community colleges also will collaborate with Amazon to offer an associate degree in cloud computing.

House OKs budget on 100-1 vote

The House on Thursday passed a $30 billion operating budget for next year that includes $1,200 teacher pay raises, $600 for support staff and full funding for TOPS scholarships, but not the $39 million for public schools sought by the governor.
