Shooting opens new leads to Christmas homicide

An 18-year-old self-confessed gang member’s shooting opened up new leads to a homicide that occurred during a 2107 Christmas party, Eunice Police Chief Randy Fontenot said.

Scavengers tear up trash bags, spread paper on street

On West Jane Street, located just north of Abbeville, there was a 25 yard stretch of trash that should not be there, according to Police Jury Wayne Touchet. Touchet discovered the mess Tuesday afternoon. He got down and went through the trash and saw addresses and names of who the trash belonged to.

Oil/gas drilling activity, interest growing in area

ConocoPhillips is making a play in Louisiana’s portion of the Austin Chalk formation, raising the prospect of a resurgence of onshore drilling activity in the state. Some reports claim the the Houston-based oil company’s effort could be focused in the Simmesport area.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 28, at St. Theresa Catholic Church in Crowley for Mrs. Eva Mae Clement, 101, who passed away on Saturday, April 21, 2018, in Crowley. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery in Crowley.

Vermilion Parish School employee insurance claims climbing

Three months into the calender year, Chris Hebert, an insurance agent with Dwight Andrus Insurance, informed the school board that claims are $764,000 more than the same time last year. Hebert gave a power point presentation to the Vermilion Parish School Board and a packed house on Thursday.

Rayne Police make arrest in burglaries

A Rayne man has been arrested and another is being sought in connection with a number of thefts and burglaries. Police Chief Carroll J. Stelly said Nathaniel Joseph Roberts, 20, has been charged with theft of a motor vehicle and simple burglary.

Search for new superintendent heating up

The deadline to submit applications for the Acadia Parish School Board Superintendent is Friday, April 27. After 15 years as superintendent, John Bourque has only about a month left in office.
