Riverboat slots may go ashore

The chairman of a gaming task force said Thursday it would recommend that the Legislature allow riverboats to place slot machines on land up to 1,200 feet from the shore to generate more revenue and compete with casinos in Mississippi.

Doomsday budget would empty parish prisons of state inmates

Department of Public Safety and Corrections Secretary Jimmy LeBlanc said most parish jails would be unable to continue to house state prisoners if $40 million in cuts proposed in Gov. John Bel Edwards’ preliminary budget went through.

Doomsday budget cuts payments to private schools

State Superintendent of Education John White said Tuesday that the governor’s new budget would eliminate subsidized lunches and other reimbursements to private schools. The changes would save $20 million, White said.

Woman dies in Eunice apartment fire

A 67-year-old woman, Patsy Garcia, was killed in a fire atathe Sweetridge Apartments in Eunice at about 9 a.m. Sunday. First responders were at the scene in the 1500 block of West Maple Avenue, Apt. 32.
