As fiscal year begins, 31 new laws enacted

Part of the policy yield from six lawmaking sessions held over the past 18 months came into view this past weekend when several new laws were enacted. That included the official state budget, which weighs in at $28 billion and took effect on July 1, the start of the 2017-2018 fiscal year.

New rice lines featured at AgCenter field day

More than 400 people attended the LSU AgCenter H. Rouse Caffey Rice Research Station field day on June 28 to hear about the latest work being done to help rice farmers.

Tips sought in Opelousas area burglary

St. Landry Crime Stoppers and the St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office are seeking tips to solve a theft at Insulation Services Incorporated located on U.S. 167 in Opelousas for a business burglary. Someone stole three utility trailers, a side-by-side and numerous tools.

Louisiana, California bear misconceptions

I recently spent time in San Diego, California, at a NRECA convention. NRECA is the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association. Its roots go back to the Rural Electrification Act of 1936. It was enacted by FDR as part of the New Deal.
