House rejects shorter waiting period for divorce

The Louisiana House of Representatives Tuesday defeated 44-52 a bill to shorten waiting periods for couples seeking a no-fault divorce. Opponents warned it would undercut reconciliation efforts.

Senate bill challenges death penalty; victims protest

A bill to eliminate the death penalty moved to the Senate floor Tuesday after hours-long testimony from victims, faith leaders and law enforcement representatives. Sen. Dan Claitor’s Senate Bill 142 was sent favorably after a 6-1 vote, with Sen. Bodi White, R-Baton Rouge, the lone opposing vote.

Pre-kindergarten registration dates set All Eunice public schools will be have pre-kindergarten sign-up now through May 18 from 9 to 11 a.m. Children must be 4 years old by Sept. 30 in order to qualify for the pre-K program.

Saturday election to decide judicial seat

Voters return to the polls here Saturday to fill a seat on the 3rd Circuit Court of Appeals. Candyce Perret and Susan Theall are in the runoff from the March 25 election. Perret won 41 percent of the March 25 vote followed by Theall with 37 percent.

Marshal’s Office employee wins annual Rotary award

Misty Credeur, a 13-year employee of City Marshal Terry Darbonne, won the Eunice Rotary Club’s annual Administrative Assistant of the Year award. The award was presented Wednesday at the club’s 31st annual luncheon at St. Thomas More Church Hall. The Rotary Club solicits nominations for the award.

Eunice area theft suspect caught on surveillance video

On April 5, the owner of a residence off of U.S. 190 in the Eunice area reported that she was a victim of a theft and her home security system was able to capture it. In the video the suspect is seen laughing at the alarm company sign then ringing the doorbell.
