Lessie Lee Fontenot, Jr., known affectionately as Sonny, passed away on Friday, July 5, 2024 at his home surrounded by family and loved ones at the age of 76. No Services will be held in accordance with Sonny’s wishes. A Celebration of Life with loved ones will be planned at a later date.

John “Lapin” Winston Bertrand passed away on Thursday, July 4, 2024 at the age of 80. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, July 8, 2024 at St. Thomas Chapel with Father Corey Lavergne Celebrant. Burial will follow in St. Paul Cemetery.

St. Landry Parish to issue sandbags

St. Landry Parish Government has announced that it will begin issuing sandbags on Sunday beginning at 10 a.m. at the Yambilee Building, 1939 West Landry St., Opelousas, as the parish anticipates heavy rainfall this week from the remnants of Hurricane Beryl.

Founding Fathers and the Ten Commandments

Louisiana invoked a new law requiring the Ten Commandments to be displayed in every public-school classroom. A federal lawsuit was filed alleging that Louisiana’s mandate is unconstitutional. Perhaps we should study what our Founding Fathers thought.
