Opelousas man sentenced for counterfeiting

LAFAYETTE — Gabriel Bates, 33, of Opelousas, was sentenced on July 27 for counterfeiting, announced U.S. Attorney Brandon Brown. U.S. District Judge Robert Summerhays sentenced Bates to 26 months in prison, followed by 3 years of supervised release. Bates pleaded guilty to the charge on April 12.

BATON ROUGE — State Sen. Bob Hensgens, R-Gueydan, of District 26, has been appointed to positions on two significant councils, furthering his commitment to advancing energy and environmental initiatives in the state.

A solar-powered boat designed and built by a team of UL Lafayette mechanical engineering students recently became the first from the U.S. to compete in the Monaco Energy Boat Challenge. Coby Clavier announced on Friday he is resigning from the District 13 St. Landry Parish Council seat he has held since 2016. Clavier is vice chairman of the Council. In 2020, he served as Council chairman. Clavier served as vice chairman in 2019.

Ville Platte City Marshal Deputy Barry Giglio was killed in shooting that occurred while he served a warrant at about 8:30 p.m. Monday. Giglio was pronounced dead at the scene near the intersection of Laran and West Beauregard streets.
