The new year reminds me of that classic “Twilight Zone” episode starring Burgess Meredith as a put-upon bookworm. (No, he wasn’t reading on the wing of an airplane! Get your episodes straight, with “The Twilight Zone Companion,” for Pete’s sake!) True bibliophiles are all the same.

Abbeville police starting pay raised to $40,000 a year

Since taking office as Abbeville chief of police last summer, Mike Hardy has worked every avenue to recruit new officers. With the approval of the new budget, city officials have given Hardy a big recruiting pitch of $40,000 starting salary for officers.

Insurance dominates new laws for 2023

Following three major hurricanes in two years, the Louisiana Legislature made changes to state law to assist property owners with damage claims in the aftermath of a storm. Some updates also give insurers an opportunity to cover their risk.   These and other new state laws took effect Jan. 1.

‘Celebration Riverboat’ wins Showmanship Award at parade

Louisiana Office of Tourism, under the leadership of Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser, won the 2023 Showmanship Award during the 134th Rose Parade® in Pasadena, California, for the “Celebration Riverboat” float.

Council approves move for drainage funds

Eunice city officials take ceremonial oaths

The City of Eunice held an inauguration ceremony Thursday at the Eunice High School Auditorium with Van Reed as master of ceremonies. The event was ceremonial. Officials took their official oaths on Jan. 1 at City Hall.

AMC celebrates first baby

Atraya Storm Fontenot is the first born baby of the new year at Acadian Medical Center. Atraya was born at 1:34 p.m. Jan. 2 and weighed 6 pounds and 8 ounces and measured 19 inches in length. Atraya’s parents are Kailey Sonnier and Cameron Fontenot of Eunice.
