James “Carrol” Ardoin passed away on Friday, December 30, 2022 at the age of 84. A Memorial Service will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, January 3, 2023 at Quirk & Son Funeral Home Chapel with Father Corey Lavergne officiating. His ashes will be entombed in St. Paul Mausoleum.

Can you reuse your potting soil?

It’s not a bad idea to be conservative. Whether we are talking about environmental conservation or being fiscally conservative, as gardeners, there are decisions we can make to conserve money and resources. One such way is reusing potting soil.

In many states, welfare pays more than work

It may seem a cruel thing to ask whether the government gives too much money away in the name of helping the poor, especially at this time of year, when reminders to help the less fortunate are omnipresent. It is nonetheless necessary to pose the question. Most of us agree there is dignity in work.

Cold enough for you?

I won’t hazard a guess as to whether it achieves immortality like “grassy knoll” or “hanging chads,” but surely the phrase “bomb cyclone storm” will remain in the public consciousness of those who endured its cruelties.

Staying in touch with home

About once a month I get a note from someone who lives someplace else, often far away and for a long time, who reads my column in a community newspaper they still get to stay in touch with the town they will always call home.

Couple arrested for animal cruelty

A Washington couple were arrested Thursday on nine counts of simple cruelty to animals, according to a news release from St. Landry Parish Government. St. Landry Parish Animal Control was contacted about a possible animal neglect case on White Oak Road in Washington on Thursday.

Dr. Hawk Cambron, M.D., a family medicine specialist with the Louisiana Family Practice in Eunice, was the guest speaker at the Eunice Rotary Club meeting Wednesday. Cambron asked the group of Rotarians, “Who deals with anxiety and stress?” Many factors can bring on anxiety, stress and depression.
