Free child safety seat check

The Louisiana Passenger Safety Task Force and UMC New Orleans are conducting a child passenger safety seat check-up event from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at 2486 W. Congress St., Lafayette. No appointment is necessary and it is always a free event.

Port Barre kayker who died identified

Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries enforcement agents are investigating a boating fatality that occurred in St. Landry Parish on Jan. 18. The body of Thomas Godeaux, 50, of Port Barre, was recovered from the Old Courtableau waterway around 3:40 p.m. Monday.

Man dies in Opelousas house fire

State Fire Marshal deputies continue investigating the circumstances surrounding a mobile home fire in Opelousas that claimed the life of a male resident. The Opelousas Fire Department responded to a residential fire in the 200 block of Elementary Lane around 12:45 a.m. Wednesday.
