North Vermilion beats Varnado in a close game

LEROY - The North Vermilion Patriots gave their homecoming crowd a thrilling game to watch. The Class 3A Patriots scored 14 points in the fourth quarter to beat the Class 1A Varnado Wildcats 35-18. While the score looked like a blowout, it was not.

Ground game works for Kaplan against Kinder

KAPLAN - The Kaplan Pirates did not do any thing fancy or use trickery to beat Kinder on Friday. They did what they normally do - run the football. The Pirates have shown when they run for more than 260 yards a game in 2017, they win games.

The Vermilion Catholic Eagles took care of business on Friday by whipping the Hanson Tigers, 17-0. The victory puts VC at 1-0 in district and now 3-1 overall. After a scoreless first quarter, the Eagles scored a touchdown to lead 7-0 at half.

Blue Jays run past Bearcats

There were chants of “Bearcat boudin” and “Blue Jay gumbo” early in the game. When it was over, St. Edmund grabbed a 28-7 win over district rival Basile at Blue Jay Field. “It was good to open district with a win,” St. Edmund head coach Andy Hargroder said.
