On the day New York Mayor Bill DeBlasio called for a national draft of retired doctors and medical workers to be rushed to New York City, Louisiana COVID-19 cases broke above 10,000 to 10,297 cases.

Coronavirus numbers were up again Wednesday in Louisiana by 1,187 additional cases over a 24-hour period. Louisiana Department of Health reports a moderation in the death rate, posting 34 more deaths when 54 Louisianans had died the day before.

After a news conference in Opelousas on Tuesday, Ken Cochran, president and CEO of Opelousas General Health System, said a model projects the number of COVID-19 cases at 800 to 3,000. Even 800 cases would exceed the approximate 250 hospital beds in the parish.
