Trash pickup change turns into chaos

The change in trash pickup service from Waste Connections to Bayou State Waste was chaotic last week. Bayou State’s light blue cans and Progressive’s dark blue cans dotted roadsides. Trash pickup service was reported delayed across the parish. Schedules were running a day behind in many areas.

Charter school approved

The St. Landry Parish School Board approved a charter school application for Helix Community Schools at its meeting on Thursday. The unanimous approval is for a Type 1 charter school that will report to the School Board and receive state Minimum Foundation Program funds. Preston Castille, a St.

At 84 years old, Jerry Devillier has stories to tell and for more than three hours he told some of them during an interview for UL Lafayette’s traditional music course. Devillier is a preeminent Cajun harmonica player.

Tri-Parish jobless rates down

Tri-Parish unemployment rates are down compared to a year ago and the workforce is nearly unchanged, according to the Louisiana Workforce Commission. The Tri-Parish workforce — people working and those looking for a job — totaled 67,279 in August, the latest job number released by the Commission.

Burn ban declared for St. Landry Parish

St. Landry Parish Government has issued a burn ban in the parish effective today. The ban includes anything with an open flame that produces an ember. The wind can carry floating embers away from the original fire and start a spot fire.

Eunice Junior High will be closed today and Wednesday

Eunice Junior High School is experiencing electrical issues and will be closed today and Wednesday to resolve the issues, according to a notice from the St. Landry Parish School Board.
