LSUE has its songs

After 55 years, an LSUE alma mater and fight song are being rolled out in various venues in November. The songs will officially premiere at the Fall Commencement on Dec. 16. The songs are composed by Dwight Jodon.

Acadia Parish school system retains B rating

Louisiana public school students showed a modest rebound on key achievement tests, returning the state’s overall school performance score to where it was before the coronavirus pandemic, education leaders said Wednesday. The score is 77.1 out of a possible 150 points, up from 75.

Early voting Saturday includes the runoff for Eunice alderwoman in Ward 2. Incumbent Germaine Simpson is challenged by Jacqueline “JuJu” Valare. Vallare won 36% of the vote and Simpson had 33% in the Nov. 8 election.

Christmas season is about to launch

The Thanksgiving leftovers are in the freezer or refrigerator as Christmas season begins in Eunice. The kickoff event is the Christmas Festival from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 1, at the Eunice Community Garden, located behind the DMV at 2101 West Ash. The festival is free.

Parade of Lights scheduled for Dec. 15 The Eunice Chamber of Commerce will sponsor a Christmas Parade, “Parade of Lights,” set for 6 p.m. Dec. 15. Sponsors are in need for the success of the parade. Parade entries are $25 each. The parade will begin at North 2nd and continue down Park Avenue.
The annual Eunice Food Bank Food Drive is scheduled for Dec. 6, from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Eunice Food Bank, located at 2101 West Ash, behind the DMV. The food bank is in need of all non-perishables, canned goods, all staples, toiletries, hygiene items, diapers, dry goods, boxed macaroni and cheese, rice, flour, dry beans, toilet paper, paper towels, tuna fish, etc.  Monetary donations are always welcomed. 1849 was a really bad year for Louisiana. In the spring the state was swamped by one of our worst floods ever, almost as bad as the Great Flood of 1927. Yellow fever swept through the state during the hot days of summer. Fall brought an onslaught of insects that devoured crops just before harvest.
