Runoff for Perret, Theall in 3rd Circuit Court of Appeal election

Candyce Perret and Susan Theall won spots in an April 29 runoff election to fill the unexpired term of Judge Gimmy Genovese on the 3rd Circuit Court of Appeal. About 10 percent of the voters cast ballots in Saturday’s election. Perret received 41 percent of the vote. Theall captured 37 percent.

Workshop features drones in agriculture

Drones can provide an aerial view of a crop’s progress and health, but they won’t replace scouting fields on foot, LSU AgCenter researchers advised on March 16 at a drone workshop held at the AgCenter Dean Lee Research Station.

Scholarship memorial for LSUE educator Couvillion

A scholarship is planned for the longtime LSUE professor and administrator Dr. John L. Couvillion, who died March 15 at the age of 75. Couvillion’s obituary in The Eunice News stated, “Dr. Couvillion devoted his life to God, family and LSUE.

Playground equipment installed at Southeast Neighborhood Center

The Southeast Neighborhood Center is getting a $50,000 playground unit, which may be completely installed this week. Mayor Scott Fontenot said the equipment meets the latest safety standards and includes slides, stairs, swings, benches and other features.

St Landry Parish Veteran Funeral Honor Guard seeks support

The foundation has been set for a St Landry Parish Veteran Funeral Honor Guard and now it needs donations to become a reality, according to Lincoln “Link” Savoie, coordinator. Savoie has talked about the honor guard at a St. Landry Parish Council and each of the 12 municipal meetings in the parish.

Education tax credit sunset

State Sen. Morrell, D-New Orleans, has pre-filed a bill for the 2017 regular session that eliminates what he calls a ““really obscure, weird” tax credit in Louisiana. He hopes it will free up money to fund early childhood and college scholarships instead.

LSUE statement confirms softball team incident

An anonymous report of an incident involving the LSUE softball team was, in part, confirmed in a statement from Van Reed, LSUE director of public relations. ”LSU Eunice has been made aware of an incident involving members of the Lady Bengal Softball team at an off-campus location.
