Woman arrested after person overdoses, dies

KAPLAN — A Kaplan woman was arrested Sunday after police say she failed to alert first responders to an overdose that resulted in a person’s death.

LSU Survey: Early childhood education, childcare are popular

BATON ROUGE — Researchers at LSU said Tuesday that early childhood education and childcare programs are popular among Louisiana residents even if it means raising taxes to support them.

Committee OKs bill to create single tax collector

A Louisiana House committee advanced a possible constitutional amendment Tuesday to create a single statewide entity to collect sales taxes. House Bill 199 is the session’s top priority for Republican House Speaker Clay Schexnayder, who is the bill’s author, and many business advocates.

$1M street program approved

Eunice aldermen approved a $1,072,000 street improvement program for this year that includes reconstruction of about 3,000 feet of Park Avenue. The eight-street project was approved at Tuesday’s Board meeting after a presentation by Karl Aucoin, city engineer.

Sales tax collections trending down

After months of sales tax growth through the COVID-19 pandemic, collections from January to March in St. Landry Parish trended down, according to a monthly report released by the St. Landry Parish School Board sales tax division. Total sales tax collections for St.

Fund established to help tornado victims

A relief fund for the victims of Saturday’s tornado near Palmetto has been set up by Hope Alliance Community Development Corporation and Community Foundation of Acadiana. A EF-3 tornado struck the area on Bolden Road off La. 359 at 2:15 a.m. Saturday killing one person and injuring seven others.

Johnson sees harder edge in partisan politics

In 2017, first-term Congressman Mike Johnson arrived in Congress asking other members to sign a civility pledge. On Friday, Johnson was in Eunice to accept artwork by Zach Soileau depicting the Liberty Theatre and commented on the state of civility in the Capitol. “Tough right now,” he said.

Vaccinations planned at Acadian Medical

COVID-19 vaccinations are scheduled from 8 a.m. to noon Friday at the Acadian Medical Center. The Pifzer vaccine will be available by appointment by calling 337-262- 5311 or at signing up at oph4.timetap.com. The Pifzer vaccine requires two shots.

LSUE’s season ends

CLINTON, Mississippi – LSU Eunice saw its season come to an end in the Region 23 semifinals after Jones College took a 100-74 victory on Wednesday at A.E. Wood Coliseum on the campus of Mississippi College. The Lady Bengals (18- 4) fell in the Region 23 semifinals for a second straight season.
