Approval is given to terminate officer arrested in Eunice

The Ville Platte Fire and Police Civil Service Board, during a special meeting held June 25 at the Lincoln Road Fire Station granted approval to terminate a police officer who was placed on administrative leave since May after he was arrested for drug activity in Eunice.

Fire marshal offers safety tips ahead July 4th

As another fireworks sales season begins, the State Fire Marshal’s Office (SFM) is encouraging Louisiana residents to not only be safe when using fireworks, but knowledgeable when buying them and prepared if considering attending a public fireworks display during this pandemic.

Information sought about home invasion north of Crowley

Acadia Parish Sheriff’s detectives are investigating a home invasion that occurred at about 5 a.m. June 25 , in the 100 block of Paulette Lane, north of Crowley. The two suspects described as black males wearing hooded sweatshirts gained entry into the residence by kicking in a side door.

Three days left for early voting

St. Landry Parish voters have three more days of early voting, which ends Saturday. At the end of voting Tuesday, 1,675 votes had been cast in St. Landry Parish. Of those votes, 483 were in person and 1,192 were absentee, according to the Secretary of State’s website.

Jobless rates more than double from last year

Tri-Parish unemployment rates more than doubled in May compared to those of a year ago, showing the affect of the coronavirus on the job scene, according to the Louisiana Workforce Commission. St. Landry Parish’s jobless rate in May was 12.8%, up from 5.

Fireworks are a go for 4th

The July 4th fireworks show at the Eunice Recreation Complex is scheduled at 9 p.m. Saturday and normally lasts for 30 minutes. Kenneth Peart, former mayor and Eunice’s expert pyrotechnist, said a grand finale of fireworks is planned.

$34B state budget cuts funding to colleges

Lawmakers agreed Tuesday on a $34 billion state budget that provides hundreds of millions for businesses hurt by the COVID-19 shutdown but freezes $60 million in pay raises for state employees and cuts funding for colleges that also are struggling financially.

Mary Effen Latour passed away on Tuesday, June 30, 2020 at Avoyelles Manor, where she was a resident for the past year and a half. She was 91. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, July 2, 2020 at 10 a.m.
